GSK cuts sales force as marketing model changes

With the model for developing and marketing treatments changing, the world’s second-biggest drugs company is following the lead of rivals. Sales forces have faced greater regulatory restriction in recent years and the end of patents on several blockbuster treatments has diminished the importance of old-fashioned, face-to-face selling. GSK said that, despite the redundancies, it would fortify its sales force in the stronger-growing areas of its cancer treatments and vaccines. GSK will lose about £3 billion in revenues this year because patents are expiring on several of its high-profile drugs, including Lamictal, which treats seizures, Coreg, a beta-blocker, and Wellbutrin XL, an antidepressant. The medicines will have to compete with cheaper generic versions.
